Clean Energy Canada | Media Release: Merran Smith Named to "Canada's Clean50" List
September 19, 2013

We’re pleased to announce that Merran Smith, director of Clean Energy Canada at Tides Canada, has been honoured as a 2014 member of Canada’s Clean50.

In addition, she was also recognized as a member of the Clean16—the leader in her category.

Canada’s Clean50 recognizes 50 leaders in sustainable development and clean technology, selected from an initial pool of more than 500 nominees from across Canada. The nominees reflect a wide range of industries; their innovations, programs and strategies are helping to reduce energy and waste and along the way improve Canada’s sustainability record.

Here’s what the Canada’s Clean 50 selection committee had to say about Merran:

“Merran Smith is a champion for a reduced carbon Canada. The founder and leader of Clean Energy Canada at Tides Canada was instrumental in ensuring the dual imperatives of fighting climate change and transitioning the nation to a lower carbon economy are included in the draft Canadian energy strategy. She and her team convinced policy makers that energy and carbon are two sides of the same coin.”

The committee honoured Merran alongside a “who’s who” of sustainability leaders and clean energy champions, including James Mack, head of the B.C. Climate Action Secretariat, Pulse Energy CEO David Helliwell, Wal Van Lierop, the president and CEO of Chrysalix Energy Venture Capital, Karen Clark Whistler, chief environment officer of TD Bank Group, and many others.

‘I’m honoured to be named alongside other leaders to this year’s Clean50,” said Merran Smith.  “Our team is making good headway on the clean energy and climate action agenda in some parts of Canada, and we look forward to accelerating and expanding that work in the years ahead.”
