Media Statement: Energy Strategy Communiqué from the Council of the Federation

MEDIA STATEMENT—August 29, 2014

Today, Premiers at the Council of the Federation meeting in Charlottetown, P.E.I. published an updated set of principles that will guide their work on a Canadian Energy Strategy, which they hope to wrap up by summer 2015.

This media statement can be attributed to Clare Demerse, senior policy advisor at Clean Energy Canada:

“Today’s statement gives premiers the basis to craft a strong energy strategy for Canada—one that puts climate change front and centre.”

“We can’t tackle climate change without cleaning up our energy system, so any effective energy strategy for Canada needs to be a climate strategy too.”

“Premiers recognized that reality today with an updated set of principles to guide their work on a Canadian Energy Strategy. The new principles give far more emphasis to cutting carbon pollution and growing Canada’s clean energy economy than premiers did a year ago.”

“The more climate-friendly tone is in line with recent statements from new majority governments in Quebec and Ontario calling for an energy strategy focused on climate and clean energy.”

“In the months ahead, premiers should build on today’s promising start with specific plans to support clean energy infrastructure and electric vehicles across Canada. Premiers can also work together to promote and coordinate carbon pricing systems.”
