Clean Energy Canada | Facing uncertainty, B.C. budget retains support for clean economy, with necessary steps ahead
March 4, 2025

VICTORIA — Mark Zacharias, executive director at Clean Energy Canada, made the following statement in response to B.C.’s 2025 budget.

“In the face of U.S. tariffs and economic uncertainty, we’re pleased to see Budget 2025 maintain the province’s CleanBC incentive programs for EVs, home retrofits, and rooftop solar and battery storage. We also welcome the additional $100 million over two years to support household heat pump incentives.

“Premier Eby’s commitment to ensuring the government procures only goods and services from B.C. and Canadian suppliers is the right move in the face of U.S. tariffs. We encourage the provincial government to centre its procurement on ‘buying clean’ to prioritize clean Canadian products and materials in a way that is trade law compliant.

“To further help B.C. realize lasting economic sustainability, the province should also prioritize interprovincial grid connections that would enhance energy security, add grid flexibility, and support a clean power corridor across the country. As we break down trade barriers, we must similarly start recognizing out-of-province green collar professional licenses and trade certifications, such as engineers, heat pump installers and EV mechanics.

“Building on existing financial commitments, we encourage the upcoming review of the province’s CleanBC climate plan to explore opportunities to better link the province’s climate, economic, and energy goals while making life more affordable for British Columbians. CleanBC is world-leading, and the province must strive to maintain this leadership.

“A sustainable economy is a win-win climate solution that grows B.C. companies, creates new jobs, and diversifies our exports. This isn’t just about reacting to Trump’s policy shifts—it’s about taking control of our economic future. B.C. must seize this moment and make sure the next great wave of clean energy innovation happens on our side of the border.”
